Good day, Stoics. 🫡
💧 Cleanthes came to Athens with four drachmas.
He’d been a boxer. He wanted to study with Zeno, and he had no money at all.
So he worked nights.
He hauled water from wells and hauled earth in gardens, in the dark, and went to lectures in the morning.
The other students called him the water carrier. It wasn’t meant kindly.
At one point Athens hauled him in front of the court to explain how a man with no visible income was staying alive.
He brought the gardener he worked for and the woman whose water he drew.
They testified. The court offered him money. Zeno told him to refuse it.
He kept the night shift.
He wasn’t waiting for conditions to allow the work. He was paying for the work with his nights.
This is the part people skip when they tell the story as inspiration.
It went on for years. It was not a heroic sprint before a breakthrough.
It was just his life, and he was slow at the philosophy too.
His classmates mocked him for that as well. Zeno compared him to a hard writing tablet, difficult to mark but holding the letters a long time.
Cleanthes took over the school after Zeno died and ran it for over thirty years.
The fast students are not in the histories.
He is.
If you’re waiting for a stretch of time where the conditions are right, look at what you’re actually waiting for.
Most of the people you admire did it in the gaps.
📜 STOIC LINE OF THE DAY
“The Fates guide the person who accepts them and hinder the person who resists them.”
💭 GOING DEEPER
Cleanthes wrote that line in a hymn, and Seneca liked it enough to translate it into Latin and quote it at the end of a letter.
It gets read as fatalism, which misses him badly.
This is a man who hauled water in the dark for years to buy lecture time.
He is not saying sit still and accept your lot.
He’s drawing the line between the circumstances, which came as they came, and the walking, which was his.
He accepted being poor. He did not accept staying uneducated.
That’s the whole distinction, lived out over a working life.
⚔️ TODAY’S PRACTICE
Name the condition you’ve decided you need before you can start.
Find the two hours in your week that already exist, probably at an inconvenient time.
Use them this week and see whether the condition was ever the problem.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
What am I calling impossible that’s really just inconvenient?
Hit reply and tell me.
Stay steady. ⚔️
