Good day, Stoics. 🫡

⚓ Seneca attached a quiet condition to his plans.

Before committing to anything, he added a silent caveat. It’s often called the reserve clause:

I will do this, if nothing prevents me.

It sounds like a small thing. It isn’t.

Most of our frustration doesn’t come from the plan failing. It comes from the assumption sitting underneath it, the one we never said out loud.

  • We didn’t just intend to leave at nine. We assumed we would.

  • We didn’t just hope the conversation would go well. We counted on it.

  • We didn’t just plan the week. We quietly decided reality had agreed to our version of it.

Then something intervenes, and the disappointment feels larger than the setback deserves.

The reserve clause closes that gap before it opens.

It isn’t pessimism. Seneca wasn’t telling anyone to expect failure, or to commit half-heartedly, or to protect themselves by caring less.

You still make the plan. You still do the work. You still want it to go well.

You just stop handing your peace of mind to a future that never agreed to your terms.

Nothing about the clause lowers your standard. It removes the illusion that the outcome was ever fully yours to guarantee.

So make the plan today. Make it seriously.

Then add the clause: I’ll do this, if nothing prevents me.

And when something does prevent it, you will have already made room for that.

📜 STOIC LINE OF THE DAY

“Nothing happens to the wise man contrary to his expectation.”

Seneca, On Tranquility of Mind

The wise man is not surprised, because he never quietly promised himself the outcome. He wanted it, planned for it, and still left the door open.

⚔️ TODAY'S PRACTICE

  1. Pick the one thing today you are most counting on going a certain way.

  2. Say it back to yourself with the clause attached: I will do this, if nothing prevents me.

  3. Name one thing that could reasonably prevent it, and decide now how you would respond.

If the day goes exactly as planned, you lost nothing. If it doesn’t, you’ll notice you’re steadier than usual.
