Good day, Stoics.

Play your part well.

The Stoics often thought about life in terms of the roles we’ve been given.

Parent.

Spouse.

Friend.

Coworker.

Neighbor.

Citizen.

Some roles we chose. Others simply became ours.

Either way, the useful question isn’t always, “What do I want to do here?”

Sometimes it’s:

What does this role ask of me?

If you’re a friend, perhaps it asks for honesty.

If you’re a parent, patience.

If you’re responsible for something, reliability.

If you’ve made a commitment, follow-through.

Stoicism doesn’t ask us to perform every role perfectly. It asks us to bring character into whatever role is in front of us.

You may not control the situation.

You may not control how the other person behaves.

But you can still decide what kind of person you will be within it.

We don’t get to choose every part we’re handed. We do get some say in how well we play it.

Stay steady.
