Good day, Stoics. 🫡
☀️ Alexander the Great went looking for Diogenes.
Not the other way around.
The most powerful man in the world walked out to find a man who lived in a large ceramic jar and owned almost nothing.
He found him lying in the sun.
Alexander introduced himself and offered to grant him anything he wanted.
Diogenes squinted up and asked him to move a little to the left, because he was blocking the sun.
That’s the whole exchange. It’s been told for over two thousand years and it still lands.
But the part that usually gets cut is what Alexander said afterward.
He told his companions that if he were not Alexander, he would want to be Diogenes.
The most successful man alive looked at a man with nothing and felt envy.
It’s tempting to make this a story about rejecting wealth. It isn’t, quite.
Diogenes wasn’t performing poverty at Alexander. He genuinely had what he wanted and Alexander genuinely could not add to it.
There was no offer available, because there was no gap.
That’s the thing worth taking, and it has nothing to do with living in a jar.
A man with no gap cannot be bought, cannot be leveraged, and cannot be made anxious by a more powerful man’s arrival.
Alexander had the entire known world and an appetite that the entire known world did not satisfy.
Diogenes had sunlight and it was enough.
Ask which of those two positions is actually the strong one.
Then ask which one you’ve been building toward.
📜 STOIC LINE OF THE DAY
“It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, who is poor.”
💭 GOING DEEPER
Diogenes was a Cynic, not a Stoic, and the distinction matters.
The Cynics rejected convention outright. Stoicism came later and softened it: Zeno studied under a student of Diogenes.
The Stoics kept the core idea and dropped the theatre. They’d say you can own things, hold office, raise a family.
What you can’t do is need them.
That’s why Seneca, who was extremely wealthy, could quote Cynics without hypocrisy, at least in theory.
Poverty, in his definition, is a relationship to wanting, not a bank balance.
By that measure plenty of rich men are poor and always will be.
⚔️ TODAY’S PRACTICE
Name one thing you’re sure you’d be content after getting.
Write down what you said that about five years ago, and whether it worked.
Sit outside for ten minutes today wanting nothing in particular.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
What would somebody have to offer me to buy me, and why is there a number?
Hit reply and tell me.
Stay steady. ⚔️
