💬 What did they pay for it?
Someone gets the invitation you didn't get.
Someone gets the promotion, the attention, the opportunity.
The normal reaction is to feel the gap and quietly call it unfair.
Epictetus taught his students to ask something else first.
What did they pay?
Maybe they flattered the host. Maybe they knocked on a door you wouldn't knock on. Maybe they gave five years to something you weren't willing to give five months.
There was a price, and they paid it.
Then he makes the uncomfortable point. If you didn't pay the price, it's strange to expect the goods.
You want the invitation without the flattery.
You want the position without the hours.
You want the result without becoming the kind of person who produces it.
That isn't injustice. That's arithmetic.
And notice what the question does to envy. It takes a vague ache and turns it into a line item.
Sometimes you read the price and think, I'd pay that. Good. Now you know what's actually being asked of you.
Sometimes you read it and think, I'd never pay that. And the envy loosens, because you didn't want the thing. You wanted it to arrive free.
Epictetus wasn't telling us to stop wanting.
He was telling us to stop wanting dishonestly.

You cannot expect an equal share... without using the same means to acquire it.
Every advantage carries an invoice. Envy's usually a refusal to read it.

Name the one person you keep measuring yourself against.
Write down what you think they actually paid to get there.
Decide, honestly, whether you'd pay it.
If you'd pay it, you don't have an envy problem. You've got a decision to make.
If you wouldn't, put the resentment down. It was never owed to you.
