Good day, Stoics. 🫡
💭 Somebody is talking about you right now, and you will never hear it.
That thought does something to most people.
It makes them careful in a way that looks like manners but works like a leash.
You start managing an audience you can’t see, in a room you’re not standing in.
It’s an unwinnable job, and it’s a full-time one.
Here’s what’s actually true about the conversation you’re worried about.
It’s shorter than you imagine.
It’s mostly about the speaker, not you.
And it changes nothing about what you are unless you agree to help.
Gossip only lands if you go looking for where it hit.
The Stoics were blunt about this because they lived in a small, loud, political world where reputation could get you killed.
Epictetus told students that if someone reports another man is speaking badly of you, don’t defend yourself against the charge.
Say instead that he clearly didn’t know your other faults, or he’d have mentioned those too.
It’s a joke, and it’s also a whole strategy.
The joke works because it refuses the frame.
You can’t be dragged into a fight about your character by someone who doesn’t have access to it.
There’s a harder question underneath all this, though.
If what they’re saying is true, the problem isn’t the gossip.
And if it’s false, then the only person who can make it stick is you, by acting like it’s worth a defense.
📜 STOIC LINE OF THE DAY
“If someone tells you that a certain person speaks ill of you, do not make excuses, but answer: he was ignorant of my other faults, else he would not have mentioned these alone.”
💭 GOING DEEPER
The Enchiridion is a handbook, not a treatise, and this line is written like a script.
That’s deliberate. Epictetus knew the moment arrives fast and the mouth moves before the mind does.
So he hands you words to have ready.
Notice the move he’s making. He doesn’t tell you to feel nothing.
He tells you what to say, and the feeling follows the sentence rather than the other way around.
Stoicism gets described as managing emotion from the inside out.
A lot of the practical advice runs the opposite direction.
⚔️ TODAY’S PRACTICE
Think of the last piece of secondhand criticism that got back to you.
Decide, in writing, whether it was true.
If true, fix the thing. If false, drop it today and don’t mention it to anyone.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
Am I defending something, or just performing a defense?
Hit reply and tell me.
Stay steady. ⚔️
