Good day, Stoics. 🫡
Someone has you wrong.
You’ve been writing the correction in your head for about a week, and in that version, they understand at the end.
That ending is the part we need to talk about.
📋 IN TODAY’S ISSUE
The four percent their opinion actually moves
Conduct versus reputation, and which one is yours
Epictetus being unhelpfully blunt about it
What being understood would actually require from them
The Unsent Draft, ten minutes, and you keep the file
🎯 THE LESSON
In the draft you lay it out perfectly.
The context they missed. The reason it looked that way. The thing they don’t know.
And at the end of it, in the draft, they understand.
That last part is the fiction, and it is the part you are attached to.
Here is what actually happens when you send it.
They read it as defensiveness, which it partly is.
They now know the thing bothers you, which gives it weight it didn’t have.
And their opinion moves about four percent.
You can control what you do. You cannot control what it looks like from over there.
That is a harder boundary than most, because being understood feels like a basic need rather than a preference.
But look at what it would actually require.
It needs the other person to have the time, the interest and the honesty to revise a settled view.
That is three things, all of them theirs, none of them available to you.
⚖️ CONDUCT VS REPUTATION
Reputation. What other people have decided about you, assembled out of fragments, in a hurry, while they were thinking about something else.
Conduct. What you actually did, which you chose, and which you can change by tomorrow morning.
Epictetus had a blunt answer to this one. If people think badly of you, that is their business. Yours is to not deserve it.
The work is the conduct. Only one of those two has your name on the deed.
📜 STOIC LINE OF THE DAY
“If anyone is unhappy, let him remember that he is unhappy by reason of himself alone.”
Harsh on the first read. On the second read it is the only version of this where you get to do something.
💭 GOING DEEPER
Epictetus goes further on this than most people find comfortable.
He tells a student that an insult only lands if you agree with it, and that the sting is your own assent arriving half a second later.
That sounds like a trick until you watch it happen in yourself.
The ones that wound are the ones you half suspected were true.
Which is useful information, and it is not available to you while you are busy drafting.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
Whose understanding am I waiting on, and what have I put off until it arrives?
Hit reply and tell me. I read every one.
⏳ THE UNSENT DRAFT
Write the whole explanation. All of it, every point, nothing held back. Give it ten minutes.
Read it once and find the single sentence you most want them to read. That sentence is the whole thing you actually need.
Do not send it. Instead, go and do the thing that sentence claims about you, this week, somewhere they can see it.
A drafted explanation is a rehearsal for a conversation that would never have gone the way you rehearsed it. Keep the file. Keep the week.
Stay steady. ⚔️
