Good day, Stoics. 🫡
You did four unnecessary things today and avoided the one that mattered.
Then you called yourself lazy, which is the single explanation that definitely isn’t true.
A lazy man does not reorganise a cupboard to avoid a phone call.
📋 IN TODAY’S ISSUE
Why lazy is the wrong diagnosis
The three things actually sitting behind the task
Seneca, on suffering things that have not happened
What the work might say about you
The Worst Version Drill, forty minutes, today
🎯 THE LESSON
Look at the evidence. You worked. You were busy the entire time.
Lazy is the wrong diagnosis, and a wrong diagnosis leads to a useless treatment. That is why more discipline keeps failing.
Try a better one.
The thing you are avoiding has something unpleasant attached, and it is not effort.
You are not avoiding the work. You are avoiding what the work might say about you.
That is why willpower doesn’t fix it. Willpower is the answer to tiredness, and you are not tired.
The Stoic move is to name the actual fear, because a fear that stays unnamed gets to keep its size.
🔍 THREE WAYS THIS SHOWS UP
You don’t know how to start. Not knowing feels like being stupid, so the cupboard gets reorganised instead.
It will be judged. The judging is the real cost, and no amount of preparation lowers it, which is how preparation becomes the avoidance.
It genuinely matters. Doing it badly would mean something about you, so you protect the meaning by never testing it.
📜 STOIC LINE OF THE DAY
“We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.”
Note that he says more often, not always. He is not promising you that nothing bad will happen.
💭 GOING DEEPER
Seneca adds a detail that usually gets cut, and it is the operative one.
He says some things torment us more than they ought, some torment us before they ought, and some torment us when they ought not to torment us at all.
Three separate errors, and the middle one is yours today.
The task is not hurting you. The rehearsal of the task is hurting you, in advance, on a schedule you set yourself.
His answer isn’t optimism. It is accounting. Work out what the thing actually costs, then pay that and not a penny more.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
If this goes badly, what specifically happens, and have I survived that before?
Hit reply and tell me. I read every one.
⏳ THE WORST VERSION DRILL
Name the task you have been circling. Write it down in five words.
Write the worst realistic version of it going badly. Not the catastrophic one. The realistic one. It is usually an awkward conversation and a week of feeling foolish.
Set a timer for forty minutes and make the first ugly version of it. You are not finishing it. You are removing its mystery.
A fear that stays unnamed gets to keep its size. Put a number on it and the task shrinks to its real proportions, which are usually about forty minutes.
Stay steady. ⚔️
