Good day, Stoics. 🫡
🎭 The Senate stopped looking at him, which is how he knew.
Thrasea Paetus was a Roman senator who kept not doing things.
He didn’t vote for the flattery. He didn’t attend the ceremonies honoring Nero’s crimes. He walked out.
None of it was a speech. That’s what made it dangerous.
A speech can be answered. A man quietly declining to clap cannot.
For years it was survivable, and then it wasn’t.
When word came about what Nero had decided, the line Thrasea gave is the one that survived him.
Nero can kill me, but he cannot harm me.
That sounds like bravado until you read it slowly.
He isn’t saying death is nothing. He isn’t pretending he’d rather it happened.
He’s making a distinction the rest of us collapse: the difference between what can be done to you and what can be taken from you.
Nero had complete power over the first one.
He could end Thrasea’s life, his career, his name in the records, his family’s position.
And none of that touched the only thing Thrasea counted as his, which was what kind of man he was on the way out.
That was never in Nero’s jurisdiction.
Not because Thrasea was stronger.
Because it was never the kind of thing another person gets to hold.
📜 STOIC LINE OF THE DAY
“Nero can kill me, but he cannot harm me.”
💭 GOING DEEPER
The useful part of this isn’t the courage. Most of us won’t be tested that way and it’s a bit cheap to imagine we would be.
The useful part is the sorting.
Thrasea had clearly done the work long before the message arrived, because that answer is too fast to be worked out on the spot.
He already knew which column everything was in.
That’s the thing you can borrow today.
Not the nerve. The sorting, done in advance, while nothing is happening and the stakes are boring.
Because the sorting is never available in the moment. In the moment you just reach for whatever’s already there.
If you want the raw material, the 500 Stoic quotes from the challenge are still up and still free.
⚔️ TODAY’S PRACTICE
Write the worst realistic thing that could happen to you this year.
Split it into what it would do to your circumstances and what it would do to your character.
Look at how much of the fear is sitting in the first column.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
What are you afraid of that can only reach your circumstances?
Hit reply and tell me.
Stay steady. ⚔️
