⚖️ He was exiled for a crime he didn’t commit, and he liked it there.
Rutilius Rufus ran a Roman province and did it honestly.
That was the problem.
The tax collectors back home were used to skimming, and he stopped them.
So they took him to court on a charge of extortion, which is funny in a bleak way, because extortion was the one thing he’d refused to do.
The jury was full of the men he’d blocked.
The trial took a day.
He was convicted and sent away.
Here’s where it stops being a story about injustice.
He went to the province that had supposedly been his victim.
They welcomed him.
He settled there, kept working, and by every account lived well.
Years later the politics turned. Sulla took power and told him he could come home.
He said no.
Not out of spite, as far as anyone could tell.
He’d already worked out that the verdict hadn’t taken anything from him that he actually needed.
He still had his work. He still had his character. He still had people who knew what he was.
Rome had the power to move him and it had used it.
It never had the power to make him a criminal, and going back would have looked like he needed Rome’s permission to be innocent.
He didn’t.

💭 GOING DEEPER
The instinct in Rutilius’ position is to spend your life getting the record corrected.
Seneca keeps poking at that instinct, and his objection isn’t that clearing your name is wrong.
It’s that your name lives in other people’s heads, which makes it the one thing you can never fully get back.
You can spend forty years lobbying strangers to hold a better opinion of you and still die with it unfixed.
Or you can go be the thing they said you weren’t, in front of whoever happens to be watching.
Rutilius picked the second one and got twenty good years out of it.
One of those is available today.
The other one depends on people you’ve never met.

Write what you’d have done in those hours if the record were never going to change. Then go do that one.
